Edit Ian Bannen
IAN BANNEN, one of Scotland's greatest actors, was about to become a monk when he caught the showbiz bug.
Born in Airdrie in 1928, the devout Catholic planned to enter the priesthood but was drawn to the stage.
He made his professional stage debut in Dublin in 1947 and, in 1956, his West End breakthrough in A View From The Bridge. He featured in 70 movies, including Gandhi, Braveheart and Waking Ned.
In 1965 he was nominated for an Oscar for The Flight of the Phoenix, but was best known for playing Dr Cameron in the remake of the TV series Dr Finlay's Casebook. Bannen died in a car accident near Loch Ness in 1999.
